Backing up applications should have been a no-brainer for Microsoft to set a standard.

Deal with known raw material - stick with what has been proven, and not necessarily the latest and greatest. Example: the military still uses very old Intel chips when refurbishing their equipment. These are no longer in production and costs a lot more than the newer more powerful replacements which are available.
