This piece of news about JRuby on Rails ought to make James McGovern sit up.
Incidentally, I have been experimenting with a Rails clone in PHP called Cake PHP. It was pleasant, and remarkably close to Rails. Given how widely PHP is supported in the web hosting world, Cake seems to give a PHP developer a reasonable headstart.
I’d have loved to have the default admin screens that Django provides though.
We on the JRuby team are glad to see word is getting out! We’re very excited about the potential of JRuby on Rails, and it seems many in the Ruby community are as well. The Burnette piece is good press, and we’re hoping more contributors and users will start to look at JRuby over the coming months. 2006 is shaping up to be a big year for scripting languages on the JVM, and thanks to JRuby, Ruby will come along for the ride

I’m curious how come you can’t handle multibyte unicode? Are you not using Java strings?
